Work in the Verde River watershed of central Arizona began in 2014 with a feasibility study for a groundwater mitigation program to mitigate for the impacts of groundwater pumping on Verde River flows. After two years of extensive analysis, stakeholder input and program design, the Verde River Exchange was launched in 2016. The Verde River Exchange provides annual water offset credits to buyers that wish to offset the impact of their water use on the Verde River. Initial water offset buyers include prominent Verde Valley wineries, a wildlife park, an aquaponics business and others. Credits are generated through the fallowing of irrigated acreage. The program is managed by Friends of the Verde River in partnership with the Nature Conservancy. AMP Insights worked on all aspects of program design, strategy, marketing and implementation to support the launch of Verde River Exchange and continues to support the growth of the program through research and analysis and orientation and training.
